Hard Work Drives Guilherme Paulus

Most entrepreneurs dream of making a success of one business, but Guilherme Paulus has big goals. Though he has reached the pinnacle of what most people would consider success Paulus only thinks of going into new business ventures. As a young man of twenty-two, Paulus struggled to make a success of his fledgeling tourism agency CVC Operadora e Agencia de Viagens S.A. The young Brazilian worked hard and made a success of the tourism company. CVC Operadora e Agencia de Viagens S.A is now one of Latin America’s most recognized and successful tourism operators.

Paulus worked hard to make tourism available to all Brazilians, and it paid off with the success of CVC. It doesn’t hurt that Brazilian legislation passed an incentive for employees to travel. Brazilian employees receive the 14th salary for vacations, and many choose to take advantage of this incentive to go to Gramado. CVC became so successful that it gained the attention of the Carlyle Group. Paulus decided to sell shares of CVC to the Carlyle group and received 420 million U.S dollars. Paulus retained a seat on the board of directors for CVC and kept 25% of shares in the tourism company. The successful sale of CVC shares to the Carlyle Group catapulted Guilherme Paulus onto Brazil’s Forbes Billionaire List.

Guilherme Paulus decided to focus on a new business venture and founded GJP Hotels and Resorts with the goal of establishing a hotel empire. This is not an unreasonable goal for a man who has 934 locations of CVC throughout Brazil. GJP Hotels and Resorts has over $500 million in assets, and the hotel chain controls 22 hotels throughout Brazil.

GJP Hotels and Resorts owns hotels under many names including the Prodigy, Wish, Linx, and the Marupiara brand names. These hotels vary in range from three stars to five stars and in 2015 generated revenues of R $150 million.

Guilherme Paulus has acquired investors, and the contribution of R $1 billion and plans are in the works for the construction of 19 new hotels. When Guilherme Paulus was asked if he would sell GJP Hotels and Resorts as he eventually plans to do with CVC he laughed and explained that GJP Hotels and Resorts are a legacy he intends to leave for his family.
