James Dondero is a revered professional who has served the financial industry for the past three decades. He is highly experienced in handling the credit and equity markets. Dondero and his business partner Mark Okada co-founded Highland Capital Management, which is a company that provides a broad range of product and services for both retail and institutional investors. The firm has currently been assigned over $14.9bilion in assets under management. The corporations that it serves include NexPoint Capital (healthcare BDC), Acis Capital Management (CLOs), NexPoint Residential Trust (REIT), and Acis Capital Management (CLOs).
The excellent performance of Highland Street Capital has enabled to win various awards. In 2014, the firm was named as the winner of the Global Allocation category of the Morningstar’s 5-star award and the Floating Rate Opportunities group of the Lipper Award. Morningstar also ranked it as the leading Healthcare Long/Short Equity Fund in the same year.
Mr. Dondero kicked off his career as an analyst in 1984 after completing his accounting and finance degrees from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. He was awarded Beta Gamma Sigma, Beta Alpha Psi, which is the highest honor. In the same year, James enrolled at the Morgan Guaranty training program. He is also a holder of professional accreditations such as Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Management Accountant. In 1985, the finance expert was hired by American Express to serve as the Corporate Bond Analyst. The company later promoted him to act as a portfolio manager and was in charge of about $1 billion in fixed revenue funds. He left American Express in 1989.
James once served as the chief investment officer of a GIV division that is called Protective Life. The subsidiary was created in 1989, and he managed to grow it to a worth of over $2 billion. Dondero serves as the chairperson of institutions such as and CCS Medical, NexBank, Cornerstone Healthcare, and NexPoint. MGM Studios and American Banknote have appointed him to sit on their boards. He has donated money to various charity organizations that include Education is Freedom, George W. Bush Presidential Library and Institute, SMU’s Tower Scholars Program, Uplift Education, and Perot Museum of Natural Science.
